SMAT 2022: Goa’s Arjun Tendulkar and J&K’s Umran Malik star with the ball with 4-fers for their teams

Goa lost to Hyderabad and J&K lost to Maharashtra in close encounters.

Arjun Tendulkar for Goa | BCCIArjun Tendulkar, playing for Goa rocked the Hyderabad batting unit with an excellent spell in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022 (SMAT) group B match on Friday. The match was played in the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur and saw Hyderabad prevail over Goa.

Goa captain Snehal Kauthankar won the toss and chose to field first. Arjun Tendulkar opened the bowling and struck early, sending back Hyderabad keeper-opener Prateek Reddy to the pavilion for 3 runs.

After a 112-run partnership between Tanmay Agarwal (55) and Tilak Varma (62), Tendulkar struck in succession, first dismissing Varma LBW, then Rahul Buddhi for 8 runs, and also got rid of dangerous Ravi Teja for 4 runs. He finished with figures of 4/10 in his 4 overs as Hyderabad made 177/6.

However, Goa failed to chase it down as none of their batters could conjure a big score with Aditya Kaushik top-scoring with 33 runs and Tunish Sawkar making 23 runs. They finished with 140 in 18.5 overs to lose by 37 runs. Ravi Teja with 4/20 was the star for Hyderabad.

On the other hand, another young pacer, Jammu and Kashmir’s (J&K) Umran Malik rattled the Maharashtra batting lineup in an thrilling encounter that was played in Mohali’s PCA Stadium.

Umran Malik | TwitterMaharashtra captain Ruturaj Gaikwad fielded first after winning the toss. Thanks to 55 from Abdul Samad and 44 from Shubham Khajuria, J&K posted a commendable 175/5 in 20 overs. Rajvardhan Hangargekar and Azim Kazi picked two wickets each for Maharashtra.

In reply, Maharashtra managed to overhaul the score with 3 balls to spare and 3 wickets in hand finishing on 176/7. Pavan Shah with 51 and Rahul Tripathi with 59 were the main architects for Maharashtra’s win by 3 wickets.

But the victory didn’t come easily as Umran Malik bowled the 19th over with 8 needed of 12 balls and gave only 4 runs and picked two wickets, finishing with figures of 4/27 in his 4 overs.

He dismissed captain Ruturaj Gaikwad for 12, Pavan Shah for 51, Divyang Hinganekar for 17 and Shamshuzama Kazi for 0.
