India batter Cheteshwar Pujara celebrated his Sussex County debut against Derbyshire by scoring a magnificent century in the second innings on April 17, 2022, as his team was made to follow on.
Derbyshire had won the toss and chose to bat first. Shan Masood top-scored with 239, while Wayne Madsen made 111, as they declared their first innings on 505/8. However, in their first innings, Sussex only managed 174 with captain Tom Haines top-scoring with 41 and Cheteshwar Pujara making 6, while fellow debutant, Mohammad Rizwan of Pakistan made 22 runs.
For Derbyshire, Sam Conners and Nick Potts took three wickets each.
Derbyshire then asked Sussex to follow on and this time, captain Haines dug his heels and scored a brilliant double century and got excellent support from Cheteshwar Pujara who scored a brilliant century off 238 balls. At the time of writing this piece, Pujara was on 115 in 248 balls with 16 fours to his name as Sussex was on 377/2.
This was his first for Sussex in the County Championship and the 51st of his FC career.
