The BCCI, in development on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, has decided to postpone the upcoming domestic cricket tournaments in various parts of India, including the Ranji Trophy 2022 owing to the rising cases of Omicron variant of COVID-19 virus.
Various states are in process of limiting the exposure of individuals in public and preventing mass gatherings. Cinema Halls, wedding venues, and stadiums including sports complexes are being shut down in multiple places as India reported more than 33,000 fresh COVID cases in the last 24 hours, out of which 1892 cases were of the Omicron variant.
The decision was taken by the Board officials after a virtual meeting on Tuesday which was headed by BCCI President Sourav Ganguly.

“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced the postponement of the Ranji Trophy, Col C K Nayudu Trophy & Senior Women’s T20 League for the 2021-22 season in the wake of the rising COVID-19 cases in the country. The Ranji Trophy & Col C K Nayudu Trophy was scheduled to begin this month while the Senior Women’s T20 League was scheduled to commence in February.
BCCI does not want to compromise the safety of the players, support staff, match officials, and other participants involved and hence, has decided to put the three tournaments on hold till further notice. The BCCI will continue to assess the situation and take a call on the start of the tournaments accordingly.
BCCI thanks and continues to appreciate the efforts of the healthcare workers, state associations, players, support staff, match officials, and all the service providers who put their best foot forward to host more than 700 matches across 11 tournaments in the current 2021-22 domestic season,” the BCCI said in an official statement.
Recently, the Bengal team had a COVID outbreak in their camp as they prepared for a warmup match against Mumbai. 6 players and one staff member tested positive for the COVID virus.
