Amol Muzumdar becomes Mumbai head coach for 2021-22 domestic season

Mumbai stalwart Amol Muzumdar has been appointed as head coach of the Mumbai team for the domestic season 2021-22. 

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) had invited applications for the position of head coach of the Mumbai team after Ramesh Powar was appointed as the head coach of the India women's team.

Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) consisting of Jatin Paranjpe (chairman), Nilesh Kulkarni, and Vinod Kambli interviewed nine candidates including Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Wasim Jaffer, Sairaj Bahutule, Sulakshan Kulkarni, Pradeep Sunderram, Nandan Phadnis, Umesh Patwal, Vinod Raghvan, and Amol Muzumdar.

However, on Tuesday (1st June) CIC finalized Amol Muzumdar as the coach of the Mumbai team for the 2021-22 domestic season. 

Talking to Cricbuzz, Amol Muzumdar said that he’s excited about the new role and thanked CIC and MCA for showing faith in him. 

"I am extremely excited about the new role. It is both excitement as well as gratitude. I would like to thank everyone, especially the CIC and the office bearers of the MCA, who have shown faith in me. I can't wait to get into the Mumbai colors again. Really looking forward to it,” Amol Muzumdar told Cricbuzz.

Muzumdar further said that his duty would be to nourish the youngsters and when the senior player goes for national duty it would be his responsibility to look after other players. 

“It is an amazing bunch the team. There are about seven Indian players on that side and my duty will be to nourish the youngsters to make sure they come in well when the Indian players go for the national duty. It will be responsible to look after the Indian players as well. Getting them all together will be duty,” he said. 

Amol Muzumdar has played 171 first-class games and scored over 11,000 runs in a career spanning close to 20 years between 1993 and 2013 and has also coached Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
