Extension to his contract means rising Australian batsman Marnus Labuschagne will remain with English county club Glamorgan until the end of the 2022 season. 

Labuschagne had initially signed up with the club based in Cardiff for only two seasons in 2020 and 2021. But with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic delaying the start of the County Championship and threatening to entirely cancel it this year, both parties mutually agreed to revisit the contract.

"Glamorgan Cricket are delighted to announce that Marnus Labuschagne has agreed to a new deal that will see him extend his contract until the end of the 2022 season," reads a statement issued by the club. 

Last year, Labuschagne scored 1,114 first-class runs at an average of over 65, including five hundreds and five half-centuries for Glamorgan. On the back of that campaign, the 25-year-old earned a place in Australia's Ashes squad and became Test cricket's first concussion substitute at Lord's, replacing Steve Smith with a valiant half-century. 

Terrific performances for both Glamorgan and Australia saw Labuschagne being named one of the five Wisden Cricketers' of the Year.

"It was an easy decision to extend my contract for another year and commit to Glamorgan and Wales long term," he said. "I was gutted not to be returning to Glamorgan for the 2020 season after I loved my first year here, so I’m delighted to be re-committing myself to the club for the next couple of years."

"Working with Matt Maynard helped take my game to the next level and I’m looking forward to working with him again and playing with a hugely talented group of teammates."

"Cardiff is a brilliant city to live in, the Welsh people and our supporters were fantastic to me - it’s not always easy to find places where you feel comfortable and at home so quickly," Labuschagne added.
