The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has on Saturday (March 14) postponed all its cricket activities and tournaments till March 31 in the wake of the global Coronavirus pandemic – which is constantly spreading in the world and claiming many lives every day.
The current outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) forced the MCA to suspend all cricket matches to be played between 14th March to 31st March with the rapid rise of the infected cases in India, including Mumbai. A total number of 83 coronavirus cases registered till Saturday noon.
The announcement by the MCA came after Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on March 13 declared that all malls, theatres, gyms, swimming pools in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Nagpur, Pimpri Chinchwad will be closed till March 30 in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
At the press conference on Saturday, the MCA secretary Sanjay Naik made the announcement, saying: “Mumbai Cricket Association has decided to postpone all its cricket matches which were scheduled to be played between 14th March and 31st March 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation.”
The MCA’s decision impacted the number of Mumbai’s competitions including Young Comrade Shield 2020, Bombay Junior Shield, Summer Vacation Shield 2020 and Kale Cup T20.
The Covid-19 coronavirus has taken a toll on various sporting events across the world, even leagues such as the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Pakistan Super League (PSL) have also been impacted.
Noteworthy, many sports tournaments, including cricketing fixtures around the world, are being postponed or canceled due to the outbreak of coronavirus. It also forced the BCCI to suspend the IPL 2020 for the moment as well as South Africa ODI series in India as well.
