Australia’s star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, on Thursday, December 5, returned to training with the Victoria Sheffield Shield squad at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), as he moves closer to his comeback from a mental health break.

Maxwell stepped away from both state and international duties in October 2019 during Australia’s T20I series against Sri Lanka at home, citing mental health issues.

However, the all-rounder has returned to club cricket in recent weeks, and played three Victorian Premier Cricket matches for his club side Fitzroy Doncaster and has also taken part in some aspects of Victoria’s Shield program since his mental health break.

But Maxwell has completed a full session for the first time on Thursday morning at the MCG since he stepped away from the game and his teammate Marcus Harris expected the right-hander would be returned to the public eye very soon.

Harris told reporters on Thursday about the all-rounder: “I know he’s played the last couple of games at club cricket. I think he is doing everything he needs to do when he is ready to come back. I’m not sure if it is this week or Big Bash, but he’s not far away I think.”

Meanwhile, the Aussie also stressed on the need to be given space to those players who are struggling with mental health problems.

He further added, “I think those sort of guys need some space. I think they’ve got everyone hounding them about what is going on and what are they doing. So I think give them a bit of space and let them think and speak to you when they want to speak to you.”

Harris signed off by saying, “They are adults. Maxi has been really good and all the guys dealing with stuff have been very good and we just put our arm around them and support them.”
