Vidarbha scripted history by winning the 2019 Irani Cup encounter against Rest of India on the back of their first innings lead.

Though they couldn't chase down the stiff 280-run target, Ranji Trophy champions clinched their second first-class title for the season because they had surpassed opponent's total 330/10 by 95 runs during their first sojourn with the bat.

Half-centuries from Atharwa Taide (72) and Ganesh Satish (87) overshadowed ROI batsman Hanuma Vihari's twin hundreds and eventually made all the difference at the VCA ground in Nagpur.

Vidarbha became the third team after Bombay and Karnataka to defend Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup titles.

In the run-chase, hosts lost their captain Faiz Fazal every early for a duck. Before Sanjay Raghunath and Atharwa Taide ensured Vidarbha finish Day 4 with 37 for 1.

On the final day, the 116-run second wicket stand was ended by leg-spinner Rahul Chahar, who returned with innings figures of 2/116.

Raghunath finished off with 42, while Atharwa continued before being dismissed on 72.

This is when Ganesh Satish (87) and Mohit Kale (37) added 83 runs for the fourth wicket and took their team extremely close to the finish line.

Vidarbha needed just 11 more runs for an outright victory but this is when they lost Satish and the game finally ended with a draw.

Earlier, Indian middle-order batsman Vihari created history by becoming the first cricketer to record his third consecutive hundred in as many innings during the Irani Cup.
