CWC 2019: India-Pakistan match emerges as the most trending encounter on Twitter, beating the finale

The match ended up in a tie after 100 overs of game and the ensuing Super over too ended in a tie. The only way to determine a victor was to see the number of boundaries hit and England emerged as the world champions for the first time.

The match was discussed a lot on Twitter given the controversial ending to the finale. Twitter saw a lot of fans sharing their opinions on winning moments, shocking upsets, classic catches, and memes about the rain. According to a press release, the #CWC19 conversation generated 31 million Tweets from 20th May to 15th July. Comparing the hashtag #CWC19 to the last Cricket World Cup hashtag #CWC15, there was more than a 100% growth in Tweet volume containing the official hashtag.

However, it has come to light in the same release that despite the cliffhanger ending to the England-New Zealand final, the most talked about match in the tournament was the June 16 encounter between arch-rivals India and Pakistan at the Old Trafford in Manchester.

The second most-Tweeted was the final between #ENGvNZ followed by the first semi-final #INDvNZ. India defeated Pakistan by 89 runs via DLS method in the match as Rohit Sharma made a brilliant 140.

The most retweeted image of the World Cup was the moment Virat Kohli met the 87-year-old India team fan Charulatha Patel.
