India skipper Virat Kohli on Saturday (June 29) revealed how MS Dhoni worked hard in the nets after the Afghanistan match and helped the team post a winning total against West Indies despite a middle-order collapse.
Coming into bat at No. 5 in the 27th over, Dhoni scored 28 off 52 balls against Afghanistan while he started slow but shifted gears to finish with 61-ball 56 versus the Calypso Kings.
“After the last game he went into the nets,he worked hard, he put in a performance, got us to a winning total & we won the game, we got 2 points,” Kohli told reporters on the eve India’s clash with England at Edgbaston. “So we are very very happy & comfortable with where we stand as a team & how the batting is going at the moment.”
“We have total belief in him. He has stood up for the team many times, especially if you look at this calendar year & performances he has given. I don’t think it’s fair to point out 1-2 performances which anyone can falter with the bat. We’re not looking too much into it,” he added.
The Indian captain spoke about the good headache provided by the rise of Mohammad Shami in the tournament. Shami, who replaced Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the playing XI due to latter’s hamstring injury, took 4/40 against Afghanistan including a hat-trick against Afghanistan while he returned with the figures of 4/16 against West Indies.
“Bhuvi is a world-class bowler, Shami in the last year has come around so well - he’s fitter and picking wickets - he has that hunger. Bhuvi is recovering fast but it’s a headache to have and we will take a call as per situation,” Kohli said.
