CWC 2019: Brendon McCullum makes a bold prediction about New Zealand's World Cup chances

Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has made a bold prediction for his home side ahead of the final leg of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, saying the Black Caps have the firepower to win the title for the first time in their tournament history.

At the moment, New Zealand-led by Kane Willianson are leading the World Cup points table with 11 points having been unbeaten in the ongoing ICC event so far and McCullum believes that the Kiwis are confident to win this World title on English soil.

New Zealand often labelled as underdogs in the prestigious 50-over event, having made their only World Cup final in 2015 under McCullum after six semi-final appearances, and now they are looking to make history in England and Wales.

McCullum told AFP after Kiwis’ thrilling win over West Indies on Saturday, “Some people say underdogs but probably they don't see New Zealand play that often. Broadcast-wise they are not seen as often as some of the other teams and hence they are out of sight out of the mind thing.”

He continued, “The World Cup historically for New Zealand has always been very, very good. I think we are second in most wins behind Australia in World Cup matches.”

Meanwhile, the cricketer-turned-commentator heaped praise on captain Williamson, saying the 28-year-old is leading by example at the World Cup 2019 with his elegant batting.

McCullum said of Kane, “He is a magnificent player, turned into a fine leader. He is definitely more of an elegant type of cricketer. He is almost surgeon-like. He is among the most consistent players around we talk about. (Joe) Root and (Virat) Kohli and Steve Smith, all of them are quite similar. They are very much batsmen rather than power-hitters.”

He also predicted that New Zealand, Australia, India, and England would play the World Cup semi-finals next month while saying that whichever team seizes the big moments will win the title.

McCullum signed off by saying, “I think the weather didn't help but the back end of this tournament hopefully we will see some really exciting cricket and clear skies. To me it's fair to say you are probably looking at England, India, Australia and New Zealand (in the semi-finals). Whoever is able to seize that big moment when it does arise? I'm sure New Zealand will be confident they can.”
