CWC 2019: Kane Williamson wants New Zealand to stick to their style of cricket in World Cup

Kane Williamson’s New Zealand was the first team to announce their squad for the ICC World Cup 2019 and have reached England on May 19 in hopes of going one better than their performance last time, when they made it into the finals of the tournament, after winning all their games on home soil in 2015.

However, skipper Williamson doesn’t want to think World Cup as Kiwi’s final frontier and said, "It's a bit heavy for carry on, eh... but yeah, that'd be pretty special. We do have a lot of cricket between now and that potential reality, so it's about, as a group, looking to play the style of cricket that gives us the best chance.

"Just win all the games of cricket, I think – the recipe's simple, but not easy. No, look, we know it's going to be a really tough tournament. I think every team can beat anyone on their day and we've been watching all the other international cricket that's been going on, and it's been extremely competitive and we sort of know what to expect in terms of the conditions over there, but in saying that, they can vary,” he further added.

New Zealand is facing an injury problem to wicketkeeper and premier batsman Tom Latham, who is not expected to play in the warmup matches ahead of the tournament, and if he doesn’t get fit by the time they face Sri Lanka in their first match on June 1, Tom Blundell might become the first Kiwi player since 1987 to make his ODI debut in a World Cup match.

"It's a lot of cricket over a long period of time and it won't be perfect, but it's important that we just try to execute the things we want to, to give ourselves the best chance,” Williamson signed off.
