The 15-man Team India squad for the ICC World Cup 2019 in England and Wales was announced on Monday (April 15). The all-rounder Vijay Shankar was first out of the 15 players to express the happiness for being in the Indian squad.
The 29-year-old Tamil Nadu all-rounder was selected ahead of Indian Test team’s vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane and CSK veteran Ambati Rayudu. He has performed well for India in the limited opportunities he got, scoring 165 runs in 9 matches at a decent average of 33.
Vijay Shankar has been good in domestic cricket as well. In the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy, Shankar managed to score 232 runs in 6 innings at an average of 46.4 while in the Ranji Trophy he made 218 runs in 6 innings at 43.60.
Apart from his batting ability, Shankar is a batsman who bowls medium pace bowling and has a decent economy of 5.61. Now fielding is a plus point for Shankar as well as he can be placed in the infield as well as outfield making him a three-dimensional cricketer. This three-dimensional ability of Shankar is what got him in the World cup squad.
In a video tweeted by Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Shankar said: “Feels really good to be a part of the World Cup squad. This is my first call-up for the World Cup, it's really special for any cricketer. It is very special for me as well. Just forward to a wonderful tour.”
