Indian captain Virat Kohli is the perfect choice to bat at No.3 in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, opined Sunil Gavaskar, cricket commentator and former skipper on Friday (15th February).
However, Gavaskar also believes that the Indian Cricket Team can look at the right-hander for the No.4 if opposition post big totals on the board and India lose their openers early on in a big run chase.
Gavaskar told India Today on Friday, “The best batsman in the world needs no protection in the batting order. But sometimes you have to assess the conditions. There could be a lot of swing and movement in the air in England... and if the opposition makes over 350 and India lose the first wicket early, then Kohli could be protected and sent at No.4.”
Meanwhile, Kohli has scored 39 ODI hundreds, including as many as 32 of those at No. 3 while 1929 runs at No. 4 with seven hundreds, and Gavaskar believes he should bat at No.3 as English conditions are such where the ball swings and seams across the country.
He signed off by saying, “This is the very reason why it is really important for India to select its third opener who is technically sound. Because the ball swings and seams around in England. But if the conditions are not very different then Kohli should bat at No.3.”
