Virat Kohli failed to make a mark in India’s final group-stage match of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy against New Zealand at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday (March 2).
The star batter was dismissed by the Kiwi pacer Matt Henry for just 11 runs, thanks to a brilliant catch from Glenn Phillips at the backward point region.
Kohli came into this match on the back of a match-winning century against Pakistan, and many hoped the Indian stalwart would deliver once again, particularly in his 300th ODI match. But it wasn’t meant to be as the right-hander managed to face only 14 balls and hit two boundaries in his brief knock.
After Kohli’s early dismissal, the fans on social media platform Instagram vented out their frustrations by targeting the wrong Philips. Several negative comments were seen in the official account of Philips -- the electronics brand.
Coming to the match, India managed to post a modest 249/9 on the board after being asked to bat first. Following the top-order collapse, Shreyas Iyer rose to the occasion and played a valuable knock of 79 while Hardik Pandya (45) and Axar Patel (42) made notable contributions with the bat.
Matt Henry was the stand-out bowler for the Kiwis, returning with the figures of 5/42 in his eight overs.
In reply, New Zealand were 137/4 after 33 overs, needing 113 more runs to win the game. Kane Williamson (66*) and Glenn Phillips (3*) were unbeaten in the middle at the time of writing this article.
