Mohammed Shami's five-wicket haul and Shubman Gill's unbroken century highlighted India's six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 opener in Dubai on Thursday.
While a couple of dropped catches and a missed stumping allowed Bangladesh to mount a comeback and fight, the Indian fielders put in some excellent work.
Virat Kohli's overhead ball at covers, Gill's sharp grab at first slip, wicketkeeper KL Rahul's excellent grabs, and Mohammed Shami's dashing catch near the fine leg zone were among the standout performances.
And as has been the custom of the Indian cricket team, the best fielder was rewarded for his effort after the match. There were three contenders – Kohli, Rahul and Gill.
“Well done, boys. Fielding in Dubai isn’t straightforward. The dome lights out there make catching a bit tricky. We take every game as an opportunity to learn and respond. All I would see is next game, we come back stronger.
Someone who has really shown that he does what he does all the time going into positions, grabbing every opportunity when it comes his way – none other than Virat Kohli," fielding coach Dilip said while addressing the India players.
Dilip continued, “He’s been very consistent behind the stumps, it’s never easy because with the new ball, diving on the leg-side – he’s been doing really well taking those catches, KL Rahul."
Dilip then asked 'livewire' Ravindra Jadeja to present the medal. Rahul was awarded the fielder of the match medal, which was announced on the Dubai International Stadium's large screen.
