Shubman Gill, India opener, stated that he was very hungry to win the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He also said that he remembers MS Dhoni’s jumping celebration as India defeated England in the final of the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be played in Pakistan and Dubai, with India playing its matches in Dubai. The tournament will begin from February 19 with India being placed in Group A with Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh.
India will open its CT 2025 on February 20 against Bangladesh and will then clash with Pakistan on February 23. Their final group match will be against New Zealand on March 2.
Shubman Gill has been named in India’s 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and will be vice-captain to Rohit Sharma.
In a video shared by ICC on its social media, Shubman Gill talked about the importance and hunger of winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
“I’m definitely very hungry, and it is something that you always dream of as a kid, I’ve played one ICC tournament and came very close to winning a senior men’s trophy. There is no space for defeat only. I think the top teams are playing, and it’s very exciting and very grueling, and you know that you don’t have any margin of error, so that is very exciting,” Gill told ICC.
Gill also recalled India’s win in the final of the 2013 Champions Trophy over England and shared that he remembers then-India captain MS Dhoni’s joyous celebration after they won the final.
“I remember watching it from home. Whenever I think of that Champion’s Trophy, there are a couple of things that I remember. One is Mahi bhai jumping when he missed the Ashwin bhai ball, and I think they (England) needed five runs off the last ball. The batsman misses, and then the commentators say, ‘The batsman misses, Dhoni misses, but it doesn’t matter,’ and then everybody is jumping and then seeing everyone dancing in the white coat when they were getting that trophy,” Gill stated.
India won the Champions Trophy title in 2013 under MS Dhoni’s leadership and finished as runners-up in the 2017 edition under Virat Kohli.
