Australia have named Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood in their 15-member preliminary squad for the Champions Trophy next month despite the pace duo being rested of the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

Cummins, currently on paternity leave, is set to undergo scans to evaluate the ankle issue that he carried throughout the recently held Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which Australia won 3-1.

On the other hand, Hazlewood is yet to recover from the calf injury that ruled out him out of the last two Tests of the five-match Test series against India at home.

"This is a balanced and experienced squad with the core having been involved in the previous one-day World Cup, the West Indies series, last year's successful tour of the UK and the more recent Pakistan home series," chairman of selectors George Bailey said.

"It offers a variety of options for touring management depending on opposition and the conditions that may present in Pakistan."

Nathan Ellis, alongside Mitchell Starc, round up the pace attack while Adam Zampa is the only specialist spinner featuring in the squad.

Allrounders Aaron Hardie and Matthew Short have also been picked in the squad while Alex Carey has retained his spot since making a successful return to the 50-overs side since September last year. Carey also provides a back-up wicketkeeping option as Josh Inglis is currently recovering from a calf niggle.

The preliminary squad can be tweaked until the commencement of the tournament, as per the ICC guidelines.

Australia are scheduled to play a one-off ODI against Sri Lanka, following the two Tests starting at the end of this month, before travelling to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, where they are placed in Group B alongside England, South Africa and Afghanistan.
