Australia qualified for the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025 final after defeating India in the fifth and final Test of the BGT 2024 in Sydney. They won the series 3-1 and regained the trophy after a decade.
India resumed their second innings on 141/6 on day 3 and were bowled out for 157 runs, with Scott Boland taking 6/45. With 162 runs to chase, Australia did lose a few easy wickets with Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith getting out for single-digit scores. But Usman Khawaja (41), Konstas (22) gave a good start.
India was without Jasprit Bumrah, who didn’t take the field due to his back issues, while Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna bowled their hearts out. In the end, Travis Head (34*) and Beau Webster (39*) took Australia past the target with 6 wickets in hand.
With this win, Australia not only won the BGT 2024 3-1 but also regained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after a decade. Australia also qualified for the WTC 2025 final and will face South Africa at Lord’s later this year.
Scott Boland was awarded the Player of the Match for his 10-wicket haul, while Jasprit Bumrah was awarded the Player of the Series for his 32 wickets in 5 Tests.
The cricket fraternity was unanimous in congratulating Australia on their series win and WTC final qualification on social media.
