A DRS controversy stirred up on Day 1 of the fifth Test match between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground when a relay catch involving Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne off Virat Kohli's bat was adjudged not out by the third umpire.
Kohli came to the crease when India were reeling at 17/2, having lost both openers KL Rahul (4) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) cheaply. The star batter edged the first ball he faced from Scott Boland to the slips, where the hosts claimed the relay catch between Smith and Labuschagne.
Diving low to his right, Smith believed to have got his fingers underneath the ball before lobbing it in the air for Labuschagne to complete the grab. The decision was sent upstairs by the on-field umpires for review, and the TV umpire ruled that the ball grazed the ground before Smith lobbed it in the air.
Speaking to Fox Cricket at the lunch break, Smith said he was 100% certain that it was a clean catch. "Did you get your hand underneath that ball?" former England cricketer-turned-commentator Isa Guha asked Smith?
"100%, no denying it whatsoever. But the umpires made the decision, and we move on," Smith responded.
The visitors went to lunch with a score of 57/3 on the board, losing Shubman Gill (20) off the last ball delivered by off-spinner Nathan Lyon before the break.
In the post-lunch session, Virat Kohli once again fell prey to back of a length delivery from Boland pitched outside off-stump and was caught at slips by Beau Webster for 17.
