Australia captain Pat Cummins revealed the meaning behind Travis Head’s unique ‘finger in the hole’ celebration. Head unveiled this celebration after he took the wicket of Rishabh Pant on day 5 of the recent MCG BGT 2024 Test.
India was chasing 340 runs to win the Test match and had lost the first three wickets very early. But then Rishabh Pant and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal got together to stem the flow of wickets. The duo took India past 100 after the tea.
But after tea, Cummins gave the bowler to Travis Head, and it proved to be the right decision. He tossed a short-pitched ball that enticed Pant to take a huge pull shot, but he mistimed it, and the ball landed high to long-on for a catch.
India's demise began with the loss of seven wickets for 34 runs in the last session. Head's celebration drew everyone's attention as he pointed his finger to his other palm, which was shaped like a hole.
After the defeat, Australian captain Cummins was asked about the significance of Head's unusual celebration, and he blushed in embarrassment. Cummins went on to explain the purpose of his action.
Cummins asked his team's media manager to describe the celebration, which he had not seen. The media manager declined to show it, then added, "In the hole, as in hole in one."
“Oh, sorry! Yes, okay! I can explain that. His finger is so hot, that he is going to put it in a cup of ice. Yes, that’s what it is. That’s normally the running joke. Was it at the Gabba or somewhere, where he got a wicket as well and just got straight to the fridge, grabs a bucket of ice, puts his finger in, and just walks in front of Lyno (Nathan Lyon). Just like that, thinks its very funny. So that’s what it would have been, nothing else,” Cummins explained.
The fifth and final Test is set to start on January 3 in Sydney. For the visitors, it will be about concluding the series with a draw.
