Jaiswal holds the key for India as they are trying to save the Melbourne Test.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Mitchell Starc engaged in some banter | ScreengrabYashasvi Jaiswal on Monday (December 30) gave an epic reply to Mitchell Starc after the Australian pacer swapped bails and asked the Indian opener if he believes in superstition.

The incident unfolded during the second session of the fifth day’s play in the ongoing Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Starc flipped the bails to distract Jaiswal, but the latter reversed the bails. Jaiswal’s act prompted Starc to ask him, “Do you believe in superstition?" To which, the southpaw replied, “I just believe in myself; that’s why I am here."

Starc didn’t stop there as he further asked, “Why’d you change it back for, if you’re not superstitious?"

This time, Jaiswal responded by saying: “I’m just enjoying this moment in my life."

Jaiswal, who was one of the chief architects behind India’s Perth Test win, holds the key for the visitors as they are trying to save the Melbourne Test.

Chasing 340, India found themselves reeling at 33/3, with Rohit Sharma (9), KL Rahul (0) and Virat Kohli (5) falling cheaply. Subsequently, the duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant added 88 runs for the fourth wicket.

While Pant was dismissed for 30 followed by the early dismissal of Ravindra Jadeja (2), Jaiswal continues to hold the one end for India in order to eke out a draw.

At the time of writing this article, the tourists were 130/5 after 63 overs with Jaiswal (76*) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (1*) at the crease. They need to survive 29 more overs to concede a 2-1 series lead to Australia with one Test still remaining in the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
