Australia’s middle-order batter Travis Head, who has proved to be India’s biggest nemesis in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, got out without troubling the scorers on Day 1 of the Boxing Day Test at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

It was a rare failure for Head against India as ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah knocked him over for a seven-ball duck during the 67th over of Australia’s first innings.

Head paid the price for an error in judgement. As Bumrah bowled a back of a length delivery just outside off from round the wicket, the southpaw lifted his bat thinking that it won't seam in or will nip away instead. However, the ball seamed in just a little to hit the top of off.

It was a really crucial breakthrough for India as Head could have taken the game away with his explosive batting after Australia’s top-order laid out a perfect platform.

Notably, Travis Head is leading the run-scoring charts from both sides in this series, with 409 runs to his name. The swashbuckling left-hander played a match-winning knock of 140 in 141 balls during the pink-ball Test in Adelaide. He followed up with an equally magnificent 152 in the rain-marred Gabba Test.

Coming to the Melbourne Test, Australia were 276/5 after 74 overs with Steve Smith (62*) and Alex Carey (15*) at the crease. Earlier, the likes of Sam Konstas (60), Usman Khawaja (57) and Marnus Labuschagne (72) scored brilliant half-centuries for the hosts.

Jasprit Bumrah once again emerged as the stand-out bowler with the figures of 3/64 in his 18 overs.
