India cricketer Virat Kohli has traveled to Australia for the BGT 2024-25 along with his family, including his wife Anushka Sharma, and his two kids. Kohli is extremely protective of his family being photographed by paparazzi and journalists, as he doesn’t want photos of his kids being taken.
Now, reports have indicated that Kohli got into an argument with a female Australian journalist, who took photos and videos of his family, who arrived in Melbourne for the fourth Test match.
The event happened on Thursday, December 19, when Kohli arrived in Melbourne with his wife, actress Anushka Sharma, and their children.
According to local media, Kohli was enraged when a journalist from Australia's Channel 7 grabbed a video of the family. The cricketer was particularly offended by the encroachment into his family's privacy.
He approached the journalist and asked to see the photographs and videos made. Kohli then instructed her to erase any photographs or footage of his family while keeping those of him alone.
Channel 7 reporter Theo Doropoulos shed more light on the situation.
“It was upon seeing the waiting cameras that Kohli became a little heated over what is largely a misunderstanding when he thought the media was filming him with his children,” he said on 7NEWS.
Kohli then made his position clear.
“With my kids, I need some privacy, you can’t film without asking me,” he can be heard saying.
Under Australian law, there are no limitations on photographing or filming celebrities in public areas, which most likely complicated the situation.
He did take a minute to clear the air with the media once it was explained his kids in fact weren’t being filmed and even shook the Channel 7 cameraman’s hand.
Kohli has been very particular about media covering his family and even when he and his family departed for Australia, he had requested the photographers to not click on his family and instead happily posed for photos at Mumbai airport.
Notably, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are not traveling with the rest of the team, as they are accompanied by their families. Kohli and Bumrah shared a chartered plane from Adelaide to Brisbane ahead of the third Test, which ended on Wednesday.
The five-Test BGT 2024 series is tied 1-1 after the Brisbane Test ended in a draw. India has to win the remaining two Tests to qualify for the WTC 2025 final.
