India’s Mohammed Siraj and Australia’s Travis Head both have received sanctions from the ICC for their heated outburst during the second BGT 2024 Test in Adelaide.
Tempers flared during the pink-ball Test in Adelaide between Australia and India, which was part of a high-stakes five-match series with World Test Championship ramifications.
The incident occurred when Mohammed Siraj removed Travis Head after a scorching 140, and the Indian pacer sent the Australian star off by pointing towards the dressing room. Head, seemingly angered by Siraj, mouthed some expletives to Siraj, who replied in kind.
A brief verbal disagreement ensued after the wicket, but the pair reconciled on the field when Siraj came out to bat during India's second innings. Head’s scintillating 140 off 141 balls was the standout performance, proving to be the decisive factor between the two sides.
He was deservedly named Player of the Match, as Australia routed India by 10 wickets to level the series 1-1 with three more Tests to go.
However, the ICC didn’t take kindly to Mohammed Siraj and Travis Head’s behavior on the field.
Siraj has been penalized 20% of his match fee after being found guilty of breaching article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which relates to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon dismissal."
On the other hand, Head has been sanctioned for breaching Article 2.13 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to the “abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee during an international match.”
Both players received one demerit point each on their disciplinary records, marking their first offense within the last 24 months. They accepted their respective offenses and accepted the sanctions proposed by Match Referee Ranjan Madugalle.
