Rahul was adjudged caught behind for 26 at the stroke of Lunch.

KL Rahul's controversial dismissal | ScreengrabThe much-anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia got underway on Friday (November 22) at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

Opting to bat first, the visitors got off to a terrible start as they lost four wickets for just 47 runs. While Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal failed to open their accounts, Virat Kohli was dismissed for only 5 runs.

At the stroke of Lunch break, India lost the prized scalp of KL Rahul, who was looking good and leaving the deliveries judiciously. Rahul’s dismissal also sparked a controversy as many felt that he was hard done by the third umpire.

The right-hander was initially given not out by the on-field umpire after the Australian players appealed for a caught behind. Upon review, the third umpire adjudged the batter to have nicked the ball following a spike on Ultra Edge even though the bat seemingly hit the pad at the same instant.

Despite the lack of the front-on angle, TV umpire Richard Illingworth went on the basis of the spike and overturned the decision. Rahul was left distraught after being declared out for 26 off 74 balls. He walked back to the pavilion while shaking his head.

Team India went to the Lunch break with the score of 51/4 on the board. Rishabh Pant (10*) and Dhruv Jurel (4*) were the two unbeaten batters at the crease.

Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood returned with two scalps each for Australia during the first session.
