Team India has begun practice at the Optus Stadium in Perth, the venue of the first Test of the five-match (BGT 2024) Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia. The first Test will begin on November 22 onwards.

Ahead of the first Test, Indian team management has a headache when it comes to selection as there have been injuries in the camp. Notably, India captain Rohit Sharma is reportedly going to miss the Perth Test as he wants to spend some time with his newborn son and wife.

On the other hand, Shubman Gill suffered a fracture on the thumb of his left hand during the practice game at WACA. India wisely opted to have a few backup players in the form of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Devdutt Padikkal, and Dhruv Jurel.

India currently needs a successor for Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. It appears that Padikkal and Jurel will be included in the playing XI for the Perth Test based on the images of the practice session that have surfaced on social media.

Players including Padikkal, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal were spotted fielding near the slip cordon during Tuesday's practice session. Jurel, who is naturally a wicket-keeper, was seen fielding in the gully.

As for the opening partner for Yashasvi Jaiswal, the names of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Abhimanyu Easwaran are being discussed. There is also Devdutt Padikkal, who did well for India A against Australia A and can replace Shubman Gill at the no.3 spot.

Dhruv Jurel showed remarkable batting technique on Australian pitches on his first tour scoring twin fifties against Australia A.

If Jurel is to play, he will be playing as a specialist batter as Rishabh Pant is the first-choice wicketkeeper for India.
