India completed an emphatic win in the first Test in Perth of the BGT 2024 (Border-Gavaskar Trophy) against Australia. Chasing 534 runs to win the Test, Australia was bowled out for 238 runs on day four, to lose the Test by 295 runs. India went 1-0 up in the 5-Test series.
India had chosen to bat first in Perth after stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah won the toss. However, India was shot out for 150 runs with Nitish Reddy top-scoring with 41 and Rishabh Pant making 37 runs.
Josh Hazlewood picked 4 wickets for Australia in first innings, while Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Marsh took 2 wickets each.
In response, Australia faltered badly as they were bundled out for 104 runs with Jasprit Bumrah taking 5/30 and Harshit Rana on debut taking 3 wickets.
India, in their second innings, were more at ease and Yashasvi Jaiswal compensated for his first innings duck, by scoring his 4th Test ton and first on Australian soil. He made 161 and added 201 runs for the opening wicket with KL Rahul, who made 77.
Then Virat Kohli hammered 100*, his 30th Test ton and 81st in international cricket, as Jasprit Bumrah declared India’s second innings at 487/6. This meant that Australia had to chase 534 runs to win the Test in two days.
However, they were reduced to 12/3 at the end of day three. On day four, there was some resistance by Travis Head (89), Mitchell Marsh (47) and Alex Carey (36). But the Indian bowlers were too good for them as Australia was bundled out for 238 and India won the Test by 295 runs.
Jaspti Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj took 3 wickets each, while Washington Sundar took two scalps.
India took a lead of 1-0 in the 5-Test series and Jasprit Bumrah was named the Player of the Match for his 8 wickets in the Test.
The second Test will be played in Adelaide from December 6, which will be a day-night encounter.
The Indian cricket fraternity was all proud of the Indian team’s performance, especially after the first innings debacle. They took to social media and praised Team India for this win.
