BAN v IND 2022: “Ishan Kishan puts himself ahead now,” Wasim Jaffer feels sad for frontrunner Shubman Gill

Kishan slammed 210 off 131 balls in the third and final ODI against Bangladesh.

Ishan Kishan | GettyIshan Kishan starred with the bat in India’s consolation 227-run victory over Bangladesh in the third ODI at Chattogram on Saturday (December 10).

The southpaw came into the side after skipper Rohit Sharma got ruled out of the final ODI with a thumb injury and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands.

Opening the innings, Kishan batted aggressively right from the word go to put the opposition bowlers under pressure. The 24-year-old slammed his maiden ODI century in 85 balls and went on to make a daddy hundred (210 off 131 balls) before being dismissed.

After this performance, Kishan has put himself ahead of Shubman Gill for the third opener’s slot in the ODI set-up, feels former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer.

Jaffer also sympathized with Gill, who has performed exceptionally well in the 50-over format this year. In 12 ODIs, the elegant right-hander has amassed 638 runs at an average of 70.88 and a strike-rate of 102.57, including one hundred and four half-centuries.

“Ishan Kishan puts himself ahead of Shubman Gill now. I feel a little bit sad for Shubman because he was the frontrunner. Before this inning, you would say he was the third opener in the line ahead of Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan. Now, he will find himself at the No.4 spot,” Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo.

“His intent, first of all, getting his fifty and then play very selflessly. He kept attacking, putting pressure on the bowlers and looking for that above-par score. He was putting his team ahead of his milestones,” he further added.

During his swashbuckling double ton, Ishan Kishan was involved in a 290-run partnership with Virat Kohli, who scored 113 off 91 balls. It was his 44th century in ODIs and his 72nd in international cricket.

Praising Kohli, Jaffer said: “I think it brings a lot of pressure off him. The first couple of games, he got out. He was lucky today with Litton Das, who dropped an absolute sitter. ODI is where he is at his best. Once he gets into a hundred-making habit, that’s a good thing for the Indian team.”
