BAN v IND 2022: “Rahul's drop towards the end and Sundar not coming,” Karthik slams India’s fielding in 1st ODI

The visitors also erred on the field in the first ODI against Bangladesh.

India's fielding wasn't up to the mark | ScreengrabBangladesh registered a nail-biting one-wicket victory over India in the opening ODI at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka on Sunday (December 4).

Chasing 187 to win, the hosts were tottering at 136/9 in the 40th over. However, the duo of Mehidy Hasan (38* off 39 balls) and Mustafizur Rahman (10*) shared an unbeaten 51-run partnership for the last wicket to take Bangladesh over the finishing line with four overs to spare.

The visitors also erred on the field and the most costly one was the drop catch by KL Rahul to give Mehidy a reprieve in the 43rd over of Bangladesh's innings. In the same over, Mehidy escaped another dismissal as Washington Sundar didn’t make any effort to take the catch in the third man region.

After the game, veteran India wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik expressed his disappointment at Team India’s fielding efforts in the opening ODI.

“Obviously KL Rahul's drop towards the end and Sundar not coming, don't know why he didn't come in. I don't know if it was because of the lights, which I wouldn't know, but if he had seen the ball, he should have gone for it. That's only a question he can answer. Overall fielding effort was 50-50. Not the best day, but not the worst day either. I guess in the end, with the pressure, we left some boundaries as well,” Karthik said while speaking to Cricbuzz.

With this victory, Bangladesh took a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The second ODI will be played in Dhaka on Wednesday (December 7).
