Team India suffered a heartbreaking one-wicket defeat at the hands of Bangladesh in a low-scoring first ODI at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka on Sunday (December 4).
Asked to bat first, the Men in Blue were bundled out for a paltry 186 in 41.2 overs. KL Rahul was the lone fighter with the bat, scoring 73 off 70 balls.
For Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan starred with the ball, claiming five wickets by conceding 36 runs in his 10 overs. Ebadot Hossain also returned with impressive figures of 4/47 in his 8.2 overs.
In reply, the hosts lost opener Najmul Hossain Shanto for a first-ball duck. However, stand-in captain Litton Das steadied the ship with a cautious knock of 41.
Bangladesh were cruising in the chase at 74/2 but Litton Das’ wicket in the 20th over triggered a collapse. The likes of Mohammed Siraj (3-32), Kuldeep Sen (2-37), Washington Sundar (2-17), Shardul Thakur (1-21) and Deepak Chahar (1-32) ran through the Bangladesh batting line-up.
The home team was reeling on 136/9 and staring at a comprehensive defeat. Amid the pressure situation, Mehidy Hasan (38* off 39 balls) turned out to be a hero with the bat, sharing an unbeaten 51-run stand for the last wicket with Mustafizur Rahman (10*) to take Bangladesh over the finishing line with four overs to spare.
For holding his nerve in the pressure chase, Mehidy Hasan received rich praise from the cricket fraternity on Twitter.
