Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian team defeated Pakistan in the final of the Asia Cup 2025 tournament by 5 wickets to become 9-time champions. This final was played in Dubai on September 28. It was a close game, which was won thanks to India’s batting depth and excellent batting.
Pakistan was restricted to 146 by Indian bowlers, despite being 113/1 at one time. Kuldeep Yadav took 4/30 in 4 overs while Sahibzada Farhan made 57. In response, India was reduced to 20/3 thanks to Faheem Ashraf, but then Tilak Varma held one end with 69*, while Sanju Samson made 29 and Shivam Dube made 33 as India won by 5 wickets in the last over, with Rinku Singh hitting the winning runs.
There was more drama after India won the match, as the presentation ceremony was delayed for a long time, as the Indian team refused to take the Asia Cup trophy from ACC chief and PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who was present on the stage.
Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, and Kuldeep Yadav took their individual awards, and later, despite a delay, the Indian team didn’t come onto the stage to take their awards and trophy from Naqvi.
This led to Naqvi taking the Asia Cup trophy with him as he rushed off the stage after humiliation. This led to the Indian team celebrating their Asia Cup win without the trophy.
During the post-match presentation, a Pakistani journalist put Suryakumar Yadav in the spotlight and questioned his and his team’s behavior, as during the event, the champions refused to shake hands due to increased tensions between the two countries following the Pahalgam terror attack earlier this year.
The journo further claimed that Surya is the first cricket skipper in history to combine politics with the game.
“Aaj aap champion bane, achi game kheli aapne. Lekin sawal ye hai ki aapne is porey tournament mai aapka behaviour raha Pakistan team ke saath, aapne handshake nahi kiya. Phir trophy ke liye aapne photo-session nahi kiya, phir aapne siyasi press conference ki. Aap pehle captain hain jinhone cricket ke andar siyasat lekar aaye," the journalist said.
Suryakumar Yadav first asked the India media manager whether he should answer the question and then gave a cheeky answer to the scribe, trolling him for his anger.
“Gussa ho rahe ho aap! Sawal pata he nahi chala aapka. Aapne chaar questions puch liye. (You are getting angry. I didn’t get what the question was. You asked four,” he said.
Suryakumar Yadav also reacted strongly to India not getting the trophy and the medals, as Naqvi took away the trophy and team medals meant for the victorious Indian cricket team with him.
“I think this is one thing that I have never seen since I started playing and following cricket, that a champion team is denied a trophy. I mean that to, a hard-earned one. It’s not like it happened easily. It was a hard-earned tournament win. We have been here since September 4. We played a game today. Two back-to-back good games in two days. I feel we deserved it. And I can’t say anything more. I think I have summed it up really well," he added.
