Team India continued their dominance over Pakistan in multilateral events as they defeated the bitter rivals by six wickets in the Asia Cup 2025 Super 4 match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday (September 21).
Chasing 172 to win, the opening duo of Abhishek Sharma (74 off 39) and Shubman Gill (47 off 28) made a mockery of the Pakistani bowling attack, sharing a fiery 105-run stand to propel the Men in Blue over the line with seven deliveries to spare.
This was Pakistan’s seventh successive defeat against India across ODIs and T20Is. Their last win was in the 2022 Asia Cup when they beat India by five wickets. Since then, they have suffered defeats in the 2022 T20 World Cup, 2023 Asia Cup, 2023 ODI World Cup, 2024 T20 World Cup, 2025 Champions Trophy and twice in the 2025 Asia Cup.
Following the game, skipper Suryakumar Yadav downplayed the idea of a rivalry between two sides, citing the lop-sided affairs in India’s favour over the last few years.
Now, former India spinner Harbhajan Singh took to social media to echo similar sentiments as he shared a picture with 'Greatest Rivalry' written on it but replaced 'Greatest' with 'One-sided'.
After Sunday’s win, Suryakumar addressed a press conference, where a question on the gulf between the two teams was thrown at him by a senior Pakistani journalist.
In reply, the Indian T20I captain said: "Sir, my request is that we should now stop calling India vs Pakistan matches a rivalry. Sir, rivalry and standard are all the same. Now what is a rivalry? If two teams have played 15 matches and it's 8-7, that's a rivalry. Here it's 13-1 (12-3) or something. There is no contest."
India find themselves on top of the Super 4s points table after the win over Pakistan, with their Net Run Rate currently at +0.689. Pakistan, on the other hand, are facing a must-win situation in the remaining Super 4 fixtures to stay alive in the tournament.
