Former wicketkeeper-batter Rashid Latif has claimed that India's decision to play against Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 killed the hype of the marquee fixture, slated to be held in Dubai on Sunday (September 14).
The match will be held in the backdrop of heightened tensions between the two nations following the Pahalgam terror attack and the retaliatory Operation Sindoor.
BCCI’s stand to play against Pakistan in the continental showpiece aligns with the government's policy. As per the Union Sports Ministry's notification, India can play Pakistan in "international and multilateral events", but can't engage in "bilateral sports events in each other's country".
"I'm surprised to know that this time, India agreed to play Pakistan very easily and that's why there is no hype around the match. Things get hyped when it is censored or there is any hurdle. The tickets are still selling in Dubai and this is the first time," Latif told IANS.
The 56-year-old also mentioned that soaring ticket prices have contributed to the low-key build-up for the high-octane clash in Dubai.
"Otherwise, wherever they play, be it in Centurion, Sydney or in Chennai, it is houseful every time. The people will surely come and it will be a packed house. The ticket prices are also very high. However, the match will get hype from tomorrow, and it will be a good contest," Latif added.
The Suryakumar Yadav-led India kicked off their campaign with an emphatic nine-wicket victory over the UAE on September 10, while Pakistan will face Oman in their Asia Cup opener on September 12.
Ever since the Asia Cup 2025 schedule was announced in July, the BCCI has faced significant criticism for agreeing to play against Pakistan.
The arch-rivals might face each other thrice in the eight-team tournament, provided both teams make it to the Super 4s and final.
