Ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, India batter Rinku Singh opened up on his bond with head coach Gautam Gambhir. The duo previously worked together at KKR during their triumphant IPL 2024 campaign.
Rinku is currently plying his trade in the Uttar Pradesh Premier League. Leading the Meerut Mavericks, the southpaw has amassed 332 runs at a sensational strike rate of 179.46, with the help of two half-centuries.
The league has been a big confidence booster for Rinku, who had an underwhelming IPL 2025 season with KKR, scoring just 206 runs at a strike rate of 153.73.
However, the BCCI selectors and Indian team management have backed Rinku Singh to play the finisher's role in the continental showpiece, where he will reunite with Gambhir once again.
Speaking to TOI, Rinku highlighted Gambhir’s major role in his journey, revealing how the former India opener consistently boosted his confidence.
"GG sir (Gautam Gambhir) has always backed me and supported me a lot. When I first met him at KKR, he gave me so much confidence. I had a brief session with him where he spoke to me about pull shots. He always backs his players, and that feels really good. He’ll come, talk to you, and inject confidence. He’s a man with a lot of knowledge. I’ve enjoyed working with him—whether it’s batting, talking, or training. It’s always fun to share things with him. I’m really eager to play under his coaching again. It’s a special feeling to share the dressing room with a legend like GG sir," Rinku said.
Rinku’s inclusion in the Asia Cup squad suggests that he is likely to feature in next year’s T20 World Cup as well. The left-hander failed to make a cut in India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad (he was on standby).
While Rinku Singh has not spoken with Gautam Gambhir about the Asia Cup, he is excited to meet and have a big chat with him.
“Not yet. Once I go to Dubai, I’ll have a big conversation with him (laughs). Till now, we haven’t spoken about anything. I’m just very excited to meet him and learn from him. His support in my career has been immense,” he remarked.
India will open their Asia Cup 2025 campaign against the UAE on September 10 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
