BCCI selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar and skipper Suryakumar Yadav announced India's 15-member T20I squad for the Asia Cup 2025 at a press conference in Mumbai last week.

The biggest talking point from the presser was the inclusion of Test skipper Shubman Gill, who recently led India to 2-2 series draw on the tour of England.

Despite the top-order firing through Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and skipper Suryakumar Yadav himself, Gill was not only added to the squad but also named vice-captain.

Moreover, many fans and experts were left baffled by the exclusions of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer despite both batters being the top performers in IPL over the last few seasons.

Former India spinner Maninder Singh too was unhappy with the squad and questioned the selectors for leaving out Jaiswal and Iyer.

“See, I was a little disappointed not to see these two names. Jaiswal, I think, is ready for any format and he should be there in any team," Maninder told PTI Videos.

"As far as Iyer is concerned, I mean, you know, I really don't know why he keeps getting left out of the Indian side because he's such a fantastic player and such a positive player and contributes to the team.

"But then this has been happening for years. And when another couple of years go, you don't give him a chance, you'll find somebody else and you'll forget about all these things. But that shouldn't happen," he added.

On Shubman Gill's appointment as vice-captain, Maninder reckons it's a clear sign from the selectors that the Punjab lad is being groomed as the future captain.

"See, I feel that the selectors have basically decided that he is going to be our future captain. And if he is going to be our future captain, then you better make him the vice-captain because Suryakumar Yadav may have just another two years of T20 cricket, then you have Gill ready under him."

India will open their Asia Cup 2025 campaign against UAE at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 10.
