India’s ODI and Test squads for the upcoming tour of Australia was announced on Saturday (October 4) by the BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar in a press conference.
In the squad announcement presser, Agarkar confirmed that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for Australia ODIs to manage his workload.
Bumrah recently featured in the Asia Cup 2025 and is currently playing the home Test series against the West Indies.
“We have already rested him for the one-day games. We will manage his workload whenever possible. Since the Manchester Test, there was about a month and a half break. There is always a plan to give him a break when needed,” Agarkar told reporters.
“He is crucial for the team, but we also need to consider the team’s interests. Bumrah is always available when required. We will manage the workload of all seamers, including Mohammed Siraj, to minimise the risk of injury,” he added.
All-rounder Hardik Pandya couldn’t make it to either of the two squads due to an injury sustained just before the Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan.
Agarkar also shared update on Hardik, saying that latter would not be fit for the tour Down Under, and further timelines would be determined once he starts rehab at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
“We’ll know, in due course, how long it’s going to be at this point, in a week’s time, he’s supposed to be there at the CUE. And once he starts his rehab, we’ll probably get better timelines. But for Australia, it’s definitely not available," he stated.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli made their returns to the squad, while Shubman Gill was named the new ODI captain. However, one notable snub that caught fans’ attention was that of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
Jadeja, who was part of India’s Champions Trophy winning campaign, was left out of the three-match ODI series against Australia starting October 19. His exclusive triggered speculation about his future in India’s ODI setup.
However, the chairman of selectors clarified that Jadeja’s rest was a strategic decision. “Look, at the moment, taking two left-arm spinners to Australia is not possible. He (Jadeja) is clearly in the scheme of things given how good he is, but there will be some competition for places. It's not that he’s out of contention. Of course, he was in the Champions Trophy squad because we took those extra spinners due to the conditions there," Agarkar said.
"At the moment, we can only carry one and maintain balance in the team with Washington and Kuldeep as well, and I don't think we'll need more than that in Australia. He’s clearly in the scheme of things because of how good he is and what he offers us as a batter and a bowler, but particularly in the field as well. So, yeah, it’s just a three-match, short series. You can’t accommodate everyone, and unfortunately, at the moment, he’s missing out, but it’s nothing more than that,” he added.
