India captain Suryakumar Yadav was over the moon as the Men in Blue took the T20I series 2-1 as the fifth and final T20I in Brisbane was washed out on November 8, 2025. Even the first T20I was rained out, while Australia won the second match in Adelaide.
However, India bounced back strongly, winning the third T20I in Sydney and the fourth game in Queensland.
Shubman Gill was the focus of the T20I series, as he has replaced Sanju Samson at the top despite the Kerala batter’s terrific record, including three centuries in T20Is in 2024. Gill made 37* in the first T20I and 29* in the fifth T20I, both of which got rained out. However, his scores in the rest of the three T20Is were 5, 15, and 46.
After the final T20I at the Gabba was abandoned owing to rain, India captain Suryakumar Yadav expressed his support for Gill, stating his partnership with Abhishek Sharma is "fire and fire" rather than "fire and ice."
Suryakumar also backed Gill, saying it is a matter of batting according to the occasion and the wicket at hand. It is worth mentioning that Gill has yet to register a half-century since his return to the T20I lineup as vice-captain.
“They both are looking to match each other’s strike rates. It's a combination of fire and fire. In my opinion, if the wicket is a bit difficult, then it is important to adapt. Today, the wicket was good, so these two scored more than 50 in five overs.
In the last game, it was important to read the wicket, and these two did just that. At this level, experience helps, and see how he (Gill) adapted in the last game. Both Abhishek and Gill have good communication. It is just a case of adapting; they complement each other well,” Suryakumar told reporters in a post-match press conference.
Samson not only lost his opening slot, but this series saw him go out of the playing XI as Jitesh Sharma replaced him down the order.
Abhishek, who was named Player of the Series after scoring 163 runs in five matches, also praised Gill, saying the two have a terrific relationship that helps them establish great partnerships in the middle.
“It's just fire and fire. Look at the way he was playing today. We have been playing together since the U-12 days, so there is a good understanding. I know what shots he's looking to play and which bowler he's targeting. He is also aware of my game, and he helps me with what sort of shots I should look to play,” said Abhishek.
India will next square off against South Africa in a five-match T20I series in December.
