Washington Sundar starred with the bat in India’s five-wicket victory over Australia in the third T20I of the five-match series at Bellerive Oval, Hobart on Sunday (November 2).
Chasing 187 to win, the visitors were in a spot of bother at 111/4 during the 12th over when Sundar came to the crease. The all-rounder slammed 49* off 23 balls with 3 boundaries and 4 sixes, sharing an unbeaten 43-run stand with Jitesh Sharma (22* off 13) to take India over the line with nine deliveries to spare.
This victory helped India level the series 1-1, with two games still to be played in Bill Pippen Oval and Brisbane on November 6 and November 8 respectively.
Sundar, who is often seen as a bowling all-rounder, showcased his ability to strike big when needed. This knock enhanced his reputation as a dependable T20I hitter.
After the win, Washington Sundar addressed a press conference, where he opened up about his approach and mindset.
“I just try to wait for my opportunities. One thing I never want to do is chase results. Whenever an opportunity comes, I focus on what the situation and conditions demand, and play to my strengths. That way, I’m clearer in my mind and can truly enjoy the game. If I start thinking that I have to perform with the bat because I haven’t done much with the ball, it takes away the joy. As long as I follow my process and do what’s right for the team, that’s where the real satisfaction lies,” Sundar told reporters.
“Today, I was mentally prepared for my chance to bat. I just wanted to watch the ball closely and react positively. I didn’t overthink anything — I just focused on seeing the ball and enjoying the moment. God was very kind today,” he added.
“It’s always a great honour to represent the country. Whatever opportunity comes my way, I want to be ready for it — that’s the mindset I carry every single day. Playing at this level is a lot of fun, and I just want to keep enjoying it,” he further remarked.
Earlier, fiery half-centuries from Tim David and Marcus Stoinis propelled Australia to 186/6 in their stipulated 20 overs.
For the tourists, three wickets were taken by Arshdeep Singh (3/35 in 4 overs), two scalps were picked up by Varun Chakaravarthy (2/33 in 4 overs), and one wicket was claimed by Shivam Dube (1/43 in 3 overs) in their respective bowling spells.
