The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday (October 27) shared update on Shreyas Iyer’s injury sustained during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney two days back.
During Australia’s innings, Shreyas took an excellent diving catch to dismiss Australian wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey. In the process, however, the Indian vice-captain fell awkwardly and was seen holding his ribs in pain, prompting teammates to rush over and check on him.
Despite being attended by the physio, Iyer walked off the field and the middle-order batter wasn’t needed to bat as India chased down the target of 237 with nine wickets in hand.
As per the BCCI’s statement, Shreyas Iyer has suffered a laceration injury to the spleen and he is currently medical observation in Sydney.
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation,” the statement read.
“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,” it added.
Shreyas Iyer batted in two innings on the tour of Australia and returned with scores of 11 and 61 in Perth and Adelaide, respectively.
