Sunil Gavaskar felt overwhelmed by the emotion on watching Indian Captain Virat Kohli lift the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the very first time in Australia. By virtue of which India ended their 71-year-long wait for a maiden Test series triumph down under.
A rain-curtailed draw at the Sydney Cricket Ground(SCG) in the fourth and final Test of the series allowed India, who had already won convincingly in Adelaide and Melbourne, to protect their 2-1 unassailable lead in the series.
"I was very proud [seeing India lift the trophy], I had tears in my eyes because this is a historic moment. It would have been wonderful have been there, to present it. Because it is the first time Australia were defeated in Australia [by India]," Gavaskar told India Today on Monday, January 7 as Virat Kohli's men made the nation proud.
"But seeing that presented was good enough because my sentiments were the team. To see them win, to see them lift the trophy was really really wonderful."
The legendary opening batsman also congratulated Cheteshwar Pujara for having a memorable series and grinned highly impressed as India's solid No.3 buried the ghosts of his disappointing first tour in 2014-15 to become the leading run-getter from either side on the second one.
"I think it's down to the little adjustment that he has made to stand a little bit upright to cater to the bounce on Australian pitches," Gavaskar said on Pujara, who was awarded Man-of-the-series for his 521 runs at an average of 74.43 across seven innings, "When you come from the subcontinent, you play a little bit lower, because there isn't that much bounce in those pitches."
"So when you sometimes to South Africa and Australia, you can be in trouble. About his patience everybody knows, he has got heaps of it. And that suited him exactly right," he added.
