The third day of the second Test at the Perth Stadium of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2018-19 has ended on an interesting note with Australia leading with 175 runs and on a score of 132/4.
India began day three on 172/3, but lost Ajinkya Rahane on his overnight score of 51, as Lyon had him caught behind. While Vihari hung around for 20 runs, he was dismissed by Hazlewood, caught by Paine. Virat Kohli, in the meantime, continued to compile his 25th Test ton, which was his 6th in Australia and 7th overall against his favorite team.
Kohli’s innings was ended on 123 with 13 fours and 1 six amidst controversy. Kohli was caught in slips by Peter Handscomb on the bowling of Pat Cummins, but the catch was not clear. Kohli opted for DRS but was given out, on basis of video evidence and the on-field umpire’s soft signal of out.
Indian innings folded quickly thereafter on 283, as Nathan Lyon picked five wickets for 67 runs. Hazlewood picked 2/66 and Starc ended with 2/79, while Cummins picked a solitary wicket.
Australian second innings started with Finch and Harris withering a testing spell from Indian fast bowlers. However, Aaron Finch was forced to retire hurt on the score of 25, after his index finger was hurt after being hit by a Shami bouncer.
Marcus Harris left a Bumrah straight ball and was bowled for 20, while Marsh’s poor form in the Test continued, as he was caught behind by Pant off Shami. Shami also had Head caught by Ishant for 19 and Ishant had Handscomb LBW for 13.
By the end of the day, Khawaja (41*) and skipper Paine (8*) carried Australia to a total of 132/4 with a lead of 175 runs. Indian bowlers fought back well with Shami picking two wickets and Bumrah and Ishant picking one each.
