India Batting great Sunil Gavaskar, on Sunday, complimented Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur's stitched 123-runs 7th wicket partnership which rescued India’s 1st innings after the visitors were reduced to186/6, and said It actually showed when you value that India cap, you will do something extraordinary.

Australia posted a total of 369 in their first innings. Replying to Australia’s first innings score, the hosts were in a spot of bother after they lost Mayank Agarwal in the first over after lunch. The visitors were reduced to 161 for 5 and then quickly to 186 for 6 when Rishabh Pant followed.

However, Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur put on an absolute show on day 3 at Brisbane.The two lower-order Indian batsmen batted like a dream and absolutely stunned the hosts in the series decider at Gabba. 

Washington Sundar scored a fifty on his debut and finished with 62 while Shardul got 67 in his first innings in Test. The duo was not just blocking but they kept the scoreboard moving and recorded a century partnership for the 7th wicket.

Former, Indian batsman, Sunil Gavaskar, heaped praise on Sundar and Thakur and said that he didn't expect the Indian duo to put up a fight but enjoyed every run scored by them.

"They would have this big a partnership is something above expectations. I thought that they might just hang around a little bit, delay the inevitable but when they started to play the kind of shots that we saw from their bats. That was inspiring and it was a heartwarming revelation. Very very enjoyable to see the way they took the opportunities and scored the runs," Sunil Gavaskar told Sony networks.

"What it tells you is that there are so many youngsters who are hungry for the India cap, the opportunity to play. Look at the way they have grabbed it with both hands. You could actually have the situation when the big boys are back then they may not play another Test for a long time but they have shown with this performance, in case they are needed, they will be ready for it,"

“It actually shows when you value that India cap, you will do something extraordinary. That's what we saw today from these two,” said Sunil Gavaskar.

Washington Sundar joined hands with Shardul Thakur as both the players were on the task to rescue the visitors from a precarious position in the series decider at the Gabba. However, the duo showed great application and resilience to add 123 runs between them.  

At stumps, Australia were 21/0 in their second innings with an overall lead of 54.
