England's former opener Nick Knight heaped rich praise on Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar, who scored fifty on his debut, after taking three wickets with the ball. He said the young all-rounder has shown a good amount of application and game awareness on his debut for India against Australia in the fourth Test match at the Gabba, Brisbane.

After impressing everyone with his bowling in the first innings, Washington Sundar played a game-changing knock at Gabba on the third day of the final-Test match against Australia. He scored 62 runs off 144 balls to put up a strong fightback in India’s reply to Australia’s 369.

Washington Sundar walked into bat when India was in a spot of bother after losing Mayank Agarwal in the first over after Lunch. The visitors were reduced to 161 for 5 and then quickly to 186 for 6 when Rishabh Pant followed the top order is not converting a start into a big knock.

Sundar was impressive with the bat on debut against the lethal Australian attack as he got behind the line of the ball and played the bouncers with a lot of conviction by ducking and leaving them alone.

Former English opener, Nick Knight, applauded Washington Sundar's ability to read the game situation and said the young all-rounder impressed him.

"You look at his technique, his alignment, and all of that but what has amazed me more than all of that is his reading of the game situation. We would probably excuse Washington Sundar if he had got out at 20, having a wild wish at one because he has on debut and not played a lot of first-class cricket,” Nick Knight told Sony networks.

Nick Knight, 51, further said that the young all-rounder applied himself better than the senior players, who got out after the start and showed great dedication and application.

“You look at Pujara, Rohit, and Rahane, the senior players the way they got out. You look at this guy he has applied himself well. So much dedication and so much application and that in that situation are what has impressed me," he said.

Washington Sundar joined hands with Shardul Thakur as both the India players were on the task of rescuing the Indian innings in their maiden Test innings after the visitors were tumbling at 186/6. However, both Sundar and Thakur batted with a lot of grit and determination and scored their maiden Test fifties and adding 123 runs for the 7th wicket. India ended up with 336 runs, just 33 runs behind Australia.
