Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has heaped praise on Shubman Gill after the young opener slammed his maiden half-century on Day 2 of the ongoing third Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia at Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday (January 8).
The 21-year-old played an impressive knock of 50 off 101 balls laced with 8 fours and Gavaskar was highly impressed with the way Punjab lad confidently played some sparkling and spanking shots in his second game in Test cricket and even against one of the best bowling attacks in Australia.
The former captain further went on to claim that Gill has got a big career ahead of him called him as one of India's brightest prospects given his SCG Test fifty.
However, he wanted to see the youngster convert his half-century to century but couldn’t survive against Pat Cummins’ attack.
Gavaskar said on Sony Network: “I wish Shubman Gill could have carried on from that half-century to century. What we saw in this innings confirms that he is one of India's brightest prospects.”
He further said: “He got behind the line, he has got wonderful ray for shots, as I said, he played some sparkling and spanking shots but basically the way he got behind the line of the ball was so, so impressive and that is the thing actually you want to look at the opening batsman, how quickly and how confidently they get behind the line of the ball.
Shubman Gill's defense was as good as his Attacking batting and that is why I think he has got a big career ahead of him.”
Noteworthy, Gill became the 4th youngest Indian opener to score a fifty outside Asia, joining head coach and former captain Ravi Shastri (vs England, 1982), Madhav Apte (vs WI, 1952/53), and Prithvi Shaw (vs NZ, 2019/20) in the list with his Sydney knock.
