AUS v IND 2020-21: “Ashwin and Jadeja world-class, but Steve Smith will be fine,” feels Matthew Wade

Steve Smith is yet to get into double figures having scored 1, 1*, 0 and 8 in 4 innings.

Smith has fallen to Ashwin twice in his three dismissals | GettyAustralia’s Steve Smith has not had a very good outing in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series against India, failing to make it into the double-digits in all the four innings he has played so far.

Twice he has fallen to India spinner R Ashwin and once was clean bowled by Jasprit Bumrah. However, his teammate Matthew Wade felt that Smith will soon find his old touch and counter the Indian bowlers.

The four-match series between India and Australia currently stands leveled at 1-1 and the third Test is slated to be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 7.

Wade has hailed the Indian spinners Ashwin and Jadeja’s bowling so far in the series during a virtual press conference.

AUS v IND 2020-21: “We fully expect to play the final Test in Brisbane,” says Matthew Wade

He said, “I think they have bowled terrifically well, especially in Melbourne there was more spin and bounce, we did not expect it to come into play as it did, we did not adapt quick enough to that wicket, Steve has played against Ashwin plenty of times before this, Smith has been successful over here and I am sure he will be fine, no problems at all. Ashwin and Jadeja are a difficult spin duo, they are very consistent and we need to find a way, that's the nature of the beast.”

Talking about his own spot in the Australian team now that they have named Will Pucovski and David Warner for the SCG Test, Wade said, “Justin spoke to me, asking me if I was comfortable in opening the batting, I thought it as an opportunity to be a versatile player and bat anywhere ranging from the number one spot to number seven, I saw it as a positive opportunity. My spot has been speculated for ten years now, and I am used to it now.”

The hosts will move to Sydney on January 4. The third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Test Series between Australia and India will be played from January 7, 2021.
