AUS v IND 2020-21: Farokh Engineer supports Virat Kohli's decision; but adds he would have stayed with team

Engineer believes it's not right to troll the India captain Kohli for his decision.

Former Indian wicket-keeper Farokh Engineer has supported India captain Virat Kohli's decision to be with his wife after taking a paternity leave to go back back to India. He left the Australia tour after the first Test at Adelaide which India lost by 8 wickets.

The engineer doesn't think it's right to troll Kohli and he said it's his personal decision to be with his wife Anushka Sharma. Kohli and Anushka are expecting their first child in January.

“I disagree with that [trolling Kohli]. Why would you do that? He has made a personal decision to be with his wife to have the first child, which is not too unfair to ask for. It’s just like South America, they are very passionate about their football (so are we about cricket).

"If we lose abroad or anywhere, our house is on fire the next day. But, the very next day, as soon as you do well, you’ll be on top of the tree. You’re God. This is how passionate we are. You can’t help it,” Engineer told Sportskeeda.

Although the ex-India cricketer backed Virat, Engineer also added that personally, he would have stayed with the team. “I would have rather played for India, especially with India not having done so well in the first match. My thought would have been for my country.

"But I don’t blame Virat Kohli for being with his family. This is the modern trend. I think it’s just an age difference,” Engineer said further.

In the absence of Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane is leading the Indian cricket team. They won the second Test at MCG by 8 wickets to level the series 1-1.
