AUS v IND 2020-21: Ajit Agarkar names the best batting option at no.6 for India in Tests

Agarkar feels everyone in the team is currently seems to be an opener.

The tour games between India and Australia A ahead of the Border-Gavaskar trophy are very important for the visitors to decide their playing XI. Team India will have to sort out their appropriate openers before the first Test.

The batting line-up wouldn't be very much secure after skipper Virat Kohli leaves playing pink-ball Test. Former cricketer Ajit Agarkar sees Shubman Gill, who usually bats in the top order, as the number six batsman in India's batting line-up.

“Everyone seems to be an opener at the moment in this squad, isn’t it? Because Vihari and Rahane are obviously going to be playing in the middle order with Pujara. So those are three spots that you would believe are occupied. My pick would be Shubman Gill [at 6]. I think a lot of people have picked him as an opener,” Agarkar said on the Sony Sports Network.

Agarkar doesn't see anyone better than Gill to take the role, although India also has the option of KL Rahul. “Yes, he opened in First-Class cricket for a season or a little bit more has a good record. But I still feel that his best position might be somewhere in the middle. at least in Test cricket, because I don’t see any better options at this point. People could point put to KL Rahul and his white-ball form but if I had to pick, I’ll go with Shubman Gill,” Agarkar added.

Gill scored a duck and 29 runs in the first tour match, which was followed by a 58-ball 43 and 78-ball 65 in the next game. KL Rahul didn't get to feature in the playing XI of any of the two practice matches.
