AUS v IND 2020-21: Justin Langer reveals why Steve Smith didn’t lead Australia in 2nd T20I

Matthew Wade captained Australia in Finch's absence in the second T20I against India.

Australia suffered a six-wicket defeat at the hands of India in the second T20I on Sunday (December 6). With this loss, the hosts also conceded the T20I series with a game to spare. It was Australia’s third successive loss, including the one in the final ODI.

Initially, the home team had thought about sending most of the squad to Adelaide to prepare for the day-night Test, starting December 17. But now they are considering more Test players into duty for this week’s three-day pink ball fixture against India in Sydney.

“We’re having a close look at that,” Langer told reporters, as quoted by Reuters.

“The best practice is centre-wicket practice and no doubt the case to play a pink ball game against India under lights is a very tempting preparation for a few of your players.”

Australia have coped a number of injuries, with opener David Warner (groin), seamer Josh Hazlewood (back) and spinner Ashton Agar (calf) being sidelined.

White-ball skipper Aaron Finch didn’t feature in the second T20I against India due to a glute problem, while speedster Mitchell Starc has been released from the final two T20Is owing to personal issues.

“We’ve got six injuries now, which is really unusual,” Langer said. “We’ll obviously review it.

“That’s one of the challenges moving forward, when guys are playing all the tours (and have) different sorts of preparations.”

Matthew Wade was handed the captaincy in Finch’s absence in the second T20I even though senior pro Steve Smith was in the squad.

Cricket Australia had banned from the leadership role for two years for his involvement in the 2018 ball-tampering saga but the suspension expired in March this year.

Asked about the same, Langer said Smith was among the options considered before selectors went with Wade.

“There’s a lot of process, probably, to go through before (Smith) becomes captain again. He’s doing all the right things to show leadership without the title at the moment,” he remarked.

The third and final T20I will be played in Sydney on Tuesday (December 8).
