India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha has been diagnosed with a hamstring tear, which might put his participation in the upcoming Australia tour under threat.

According to a PTI report, Team India physiotherapist Nitin Patel has submitted the medical report and the BCCI officials will now take a final call on Saha.

Playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Saha had stretched his groin while batting against Delhi Capitals (DC) in the second half of the IPL 2020. However, he played against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the last league match, where he must have sustained a tear while fighting the earlier niggle.

“Wriddhiman Saha has a hamstring tear,” SRH skipper David Warner confirmed the nature of injury during the toss before Sunday’s Qualifier 2 against Delhi Capitals.

While the extent of the injury is not clear, it is learnt that if Saha has a grade 1 tear, which normally takes four weeks to heal, then he would travel Down Under with the first Test starting on December 17.

In case of the grade 2 tear, Saha will not be boarding the flight to Australia as he would require at least two months to recover.

Considering that Team India already have two wicketkeepers in the squad (Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson), they may not look for another stumper.

In order to strengthen their batting, India prefer Pant in overseas conditions while Saha features in home Tests, where a better keeper becomes necessity.

During MSK Prasad’s stint as chief selector, KS Bharat was often picked as a third red-ball option behind Pant and Saha.
